Just like a lot of AVG users around the world, I got the above error message when I booted up my PC. After searching and reading a bit of forums and blogs, I saw this helpful post by Sean Kearney. I’m reposting it here and adding a few helpful images so that other users encountering the same problem can have a bit of peace of mind.
I used his solution and it worked like a charm.
Thanks Sean Kearney!!!
After poking around on the web for a while it has become apparent that this is a widespread and to many users a scary problem. I did find the fix and it works like a charm. To get AVG 8.0 working properly again you must do the following:
1) Go to the AVG website at the following URL: http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-update
2) Create a folder on your desktop and download the following files to the folder:
a) AVI: 270.6.4
b) IAVI: / 1616
3) Open the AVG control panel and click the “Tools” link. Select “Update from Directory,” navigate to the desktop file that you created and placed the downloaded files into and select the file as the update source.
AVG should automatically load the update files and all of your notifications should go back to green. Hope this helps.

thanks for these easy to follow instructions!

Great help.
Still have an issue that hopefully you can assist with. AVG reports that ‘control file missing’ and wont update automatically….Any help response would be appreciated…

Sorry but Sean Kearney wrote these instructions over a month ago. If this is a new issue related to AVG, then he might have the answers (the link to his Blog can be clicked on in the above article), but I haven’t encountered this problem.
Goggling the error message can also help direct you to a more appropriate solution.

IAVI: / 1616 isn’t offered on that page. Where can I find it?

Hi All,
I wrote this post back in August 2008. Since then, there have been several occurrences of the .bin failure but a manual update helps fix the problem in most cases.
So what I’m basically teaching on this particular blog is how to perform a manual update of AVG.
One of the readers stated that the IAVI: /1616 was not being offered in the page. What is being offered as of today was IAVI: /1846. This is the latest version so I’m betting it is better than the past version. So if there ever is another major .bin failure worldwide, just look for the latest files on the AVG website and use those to do a manual update.
Again, thanks for the kind comments.
Best Regards,
Nathan

Not really knowing what a BIN file really is or does I followed the instructions provided by Nathan to manually update AVG. My question is: Do the files we downloaded to our desktop need updating each day based on the latest AVG Virus Data Base? I.e. do we need to download these files each day to have the latest updates? OR Do these files only need to be downloaded one time?

I’d say do a manual update when you have error messages with AVG. Otherwise, do an automatic update.

Forgot to add- new versions are already updated on the link that Nathan provides.
They are now
AVI 270.14.37
IAVI / 2466
Cleared up my missing .bin file error for 8.5, looks like it might work for 9.0 too.
