Hypothesis: By imitating the current top player’s strategy, one can find oneself in the top 100 range eventually.
Discussion: Looking at the data below, I came up with the MS / TPS ratio (My Score to Top Player’s Score ratio) which will more or less serve as one’s strategy guide if one is aiming for the top spot. If everyone were to imitate this strategy though, then getting there might take longer. Whoever has the will to continue expanding while being able to resource manage efficiently will last out other players in the game whose interest eventually wanes =D. (Can’t have an angry population now, can we).
Also of interest are the areas in Ikariam which seem to contribute to the top player’s ranking. She (assuming the player is female) ranked 1st in Master Builders, Research Levels, and Scientists. But in the area of Build Levels, she ranked 9th, in Generals, she ranked 1909th (giving me more reason to suspect that the player is female since most males are war freaks =D ), and in Gold Stock, she ranked 1881th. So I am assuming that it is more important to have a lot of colonies, and to keep on researching rather than pillaging and blockading ports.
One way to prove this hypothesis is if I eventually become a top 100 player. But pillaging and going to war is so much more fun =) Anyway, for those chasing after a high ranking, try to make sure that your MS / TPS values are near 100% in the areas that the Top Player in your world is excelling in. And if you beat her in the other areas as well, then you might end up being the Top Player instead. Now, I gotta get back to gaming. Have fun!!!
Server 1 Data:
| Comparison | My Score | Top Player’s Score | MS / TPS |
| Total Score | 9,033 | 49,285 | 18.33% |
| Master Builders | 267,380 | 2,852,305 | 9.37% |
| Build Levels | 256 | 431 | 59.40% |
| Scientists | 73,666 | 307,786 | 23.93% |
| Levels of Research | 124 | 156 | 79.49% |
| Generals | 97,132 | 22,660 | 428.65% |
| Gold Stock | 117,243 | 240,385 | 48.77% |
umm….this might come as a shock but war is not an end in itself. It’s really the continuation of one’s economic policies by other (harsher) means. If you are going to war (even in Ikariam) for the sheer joy of it then I have two guesses about you: (1) you are American; (2) you don’t have any money put away in long-term investments.
Ikariam is such a wonderful psych test. The idiots slug it out and get nowhere. The others organize, build and prosper.
Oh, and the bit about guys being aggressive and women being nurturing or whatever. That’s just sad.

I agree that war occurs when nations need additional resources and their own sources are no longer adequate.
It is also a means to avoid over population.
But in Ikariam, it is fun. So there. =D

Also an update, one does not necessarily have to be the top player in all categories to be the top ranked player in total score. Some person (note: I’m using person this time so as not to offend those who want politically correct statements) in one of the servers I was playing in had Gold Stocks of around 48 million and that was the only category she ranked 1st in, but she was 1st Overall in Total Score.
Her closest competitor only had about 3 million in gold stock. Makes me wonder if she was somehow able to hack the system to manipulate the amount of gold she had. Days before she gained the top spot, there was no sign of her in the rankings. Not even in the top 10 slots. Then one day, out of nowhere, there she was, dislodging the top player who had been there for weeks.

von Clausewitz,
Your statements are ridiculous. Assuming that a player is American just because he like to pillage in the game.
Regardless, pillaging is a great strategy for advancing in ikariam and keeps playing interesting. I started very late in the game and went from the very bottom to the top 50 on Gama mainly by pillaging.

And hmmmmm, you are right about pillaging. It is definitely one of the ways to quickly move up the top player rankings.
But let me just clarify that. It is “strategic pillaging” – looking for a colony with high payouts in terms of resources and gold, but low to almost no defense that pillaging these towns will cost you minimal upkeep and resources on making a pillaging troop.
I’ve been through a lot of “useless pillaging” before which ended up in protracted wars that really hurt my progress in the game – both in terms of resources, since I spent more resources producing troops than the actual loot I got back from pillaging, and overbuilding an army and navy with very a expensive upkeep. (I’m earning negative gold even when my troops are on standby).
Now, I don’t want to dismiss that army and navy for fear that those I’ve pissed off before – especially “neighbors” on the same island might pillage me back in the future. =D

What nathan says is true, pillaging is part of the game it helps you ADVANCE if you know how to pillage strategically. A top player with a low army is sure to attract some attention. I have an upkeep of 13K (on standby) but my gold reserve is 2.5 M, I got it through pillaging. BTW I am not american :p

If you really want to be number one buy cargo ships.
Pillage for the gold (resources are a bonus).
Expand and build you colonies a few hours apart to widen your pillage area.
Cargo ships are the cost devided by 400.
My next ship costs about 3400000 wich is 8500 points on the highscore list.
# Player: Wisdom
# Total Score:376,139
# Military Score:6,607
# Gold Score:1,083k (41)
Ofcourse every point helps so keep building.

Just thought that I’d update this:
Comparison MS TPS MS / TPS
———————————————————–
Total Score 492492 1530895 32.17%
Master Builders 213121 820894 25.96%
Build Levels 1296 1627 79.66%
Scientists 35223 35223 100.00%
Levels of Research 224 224 100.00%
Generals 13431 20582 65.26%
Gold Stock 1116474 2224396 50.19%
